Brace yourselves but the Tories have announced not one but two policies! And both are quite populist as in consecutive days they’ve promised to freeze railway fares for the duration of the next Parliament and provide the NHS with the £8 billion that one of those faceless bureaucrats they keep promising to fire claims it needs. Let’s leave the NHS policy to one side. It’s a shameless bribe that is meaningful only to the extent that it shows that George Osborne has not undone Gordon Brown’s legacy of shifting public opinion towards higher public spending.But the Tories pledging to intervene in the railways is much more interesting.

Shadow Health Minister Diane Abbott got into trouble with a loose twit where she said ”White people love playing ‘divide & rule #tacticasoldascolonialism” in response to criticism of the use of black community leaders in the coverage of the trial Stephen Lawrence murder trial. She predictably got assailed by all sides in response, eventually forced to back down after receiving a public telling off from her leader Ed Miliband. Her ludicrous defense that she was solely referring to imperial tactics in the former British Empire didn’t help matters as the tweet was clearly comparing the situation today with British tactics in places like the Caribbean and Africa where (for example) Indians often became hate figures amongst local populations due to their prevalence in the imperial civil service.

The irony is that her crude generalization of white people is an example of the successful divide and rule tactics used by the governing classes since the mid-sixties.
